Conversion DA
- Version Number: 2.0.4
- Revision Date: 1994
- Byte Size: 83K
- License: Shareware
- Rick Johnson wrote this back in '94 for his own use, and added a few (basically
all) other units of measurement to make it useful for anyone. It will convert any
form of measurement you can imagine to any other like measurement. It converts
quickly, with no fancy graphics, and takes up a minimum amount of space. I've played
with many other converters written for the Mac and personally think this one is the
best of them all.
Disk Wizard
- Version Number: 2.0
- Revision Date: March 14, 1995
- Byte Size: 291K
- License: Shareware
- Homepage
- Disk Wizard is an advanced disk cataloging program. It is made up of two
components: a system extension and an application. Once it is installed, Disk
Wizard automatically catalogs the contents of your volumes (hard disks, floppies,
CDs, SyQuests, whatever). Thus, Disk Wizard's catalog is always up-to-date, without
your needing to do any scanning chores. At any time, you can launch the Disk Wizard
application. In seconds, it will answer questions such as "Where did I put file X?"
or "On what floppy can I store this 300K file?". It will let you copy files from your
backup media simply by dragging them from Disk Wizard to the Finder (if you have
System 7.5). It will also expand StuffIt archives on the fly (if you have Aladdin's
StuffIt Engine). It will look for duplicate files on your disks. Disk Wizard is now
accelerated for Power Macintosh.
- MacShare comments: If you have a lot of software stored on
removable media, then this is for you. I highly recommend this application.
Disklosure
- Version Number: 1.3.2
- Revision Date: February 12, 1996
- Byte Size: 75K
- License: Freeware
- Disklosure is a floppy formatting utility for Mac and Power Mac computers.
- MacShare comments: One of the better utilities of it's type to come
along in a while. If you have a lot of disks to format, this is a good bet.
DropStuff with EE
- Version Number: 5.1.2
- Revision Date: April 15, 1999
- Byte Size: 1125K
- License: Shareware
- Create stuffed or self-extracting archives, or
BinHex files from Finder. Power Mac "accelerated" expansion &
stuffing. Extra features for StuffIt Expander, e.g., expand .ZIP,
.ARC, .pkg, .gz, .Z, .uu, & SpaceSaver files; join StuffIt segments.
(Use StuffIt Lite to CREATE segmented archives.)
- MacShare comments: If you are going to send files to others over the
interenet, you NEED this. There is no better compression software on the market.
FileBuddy
- Version Number: 5.3.2
- Revision Date: October 4, 1999
- Byte Size: 795K
- License: Shareware
- Homepage
- File Buddy is a general utility for working with files and folders. Use it
to find files, obtain and set file and folder information, create custom icons and
aliases, clean your disks of empty files and folders, duplicate files, unattached
aliases, and unused preference files.
- MacShare comments: I find this program to be very useful. It does far
more than the above read me would lead you to believe. Quite frankly, you need
to try this application out to find out what it will do, as it would take far too
many paragraphs to detail them all. I have never found a better way to keep my
Mac free of unneeded clutter. I highly recommend this application.
FileTyper
- Version Number: 5.3.1
- Revision Date: July 1, 1997
- Byte Size: 776K
- License: Shareware
- Homepage
- FileTyper is a popular shareware file and folder attribute editor for the Apple
Macintosh. It was one of the pioneer "drop-box" applications, and its power, speed
and and simplicity have drawn rave reviews since its first release in 1991.
Distributed with FileTyper is MakeAutoTyper, a widely-used utility for creating
customized automatic changers called "AutoTypers".
- MacShare comments: Ever get sick of having BBEdit open up your files
when Simple Text would do just as well? After running those text files through
this, you can make them act like Simple Text docs and avoid opening the wrong
application when you double click. A frustration saver.
MacBinary II+
- Version Number: 1.0.2
- Revision Date:July 26, 1996
- Byte Size: 24K
- License: Freeware
- MacBinary II+ is a System 7 drag & drop converter for MacBinary files. It
has no User Interface, simply drop a MacBinary file on it and it will be
decoded, drop any other file or folder on it and it will be encoded.
MacBinary II+ should be fully compatible with all current MacBinary
encoders/decoders, and extends the format to include folder hierarchies
(although no other decoder will be able to decode folder hierarchy
MacBinary files created by MacBinary II+).
- MacShare comments: This program, in combination with Stuffit Expander
and UUCD should be all you'll ever need to decipher any coded application you
download off of the internet.
ResEdit
- Version Number: 2.1.3
- Revision Date: 1994
- Byte Size: 646K
- License: Apple Computer, Inc.
- ResEdit is a RESOURCE Editior. It's very dangerous to use if you don't know
what you are doing. This will allow you to modify applications to your liking.
- MacShare comments: ResEdit is an Apple licensed product, which you
may download from Apple, provided you read their software license notice. Since
I'm not an official Apple site, clicking on the name ResEdit at the top will take
you to Apple Computer's utility page. You'll have to scroll down a ways to find
this application, and you can legally download it from them.
SCSIProbe
- Version Number: 5.1.1
- Revision Date: March 30, 1999
- Byte Size: 111K
- License: Freeware
- SCSIProbe is handy for mounting SCSI devices. It will give you SCSI Id, Type,
Vendor, Product, and Version information for each item conncected to your SCSI chain.
This is designed and intended to be used as a control panel, not an application.
ShrinkWrap
UPDATED!
- Version Number: 3.5
- Revision Date: November 24, 1999
- Byte Size: 872K
- License: Shareware/15 day free-trial
- Homepage
- ShrinkWrap is a utility that can easily turn a disk into an
electronically transmittable file (via the Internet, etc.) and then just
as easily, return it to an exact disk image of the original source disk.
ShrinkWrap 3.5 supports all commonly used image file formats, it
provides StuffIt compression capabilities, and 40-bit encryption for
international and domestic security.
- MacShare comments:Another trick that is possible with this, is that you can simply mount the image and have a very fast "Ram Disk" to work from. Apple Computer ships much of their software in disk image format, making this application very handy. I highly recommend this application.
SoundApp
- Version Number: 2.6.1
- Revision Date: March 30, 1999
- Byte Size: 1296K
- License: Freeware
- Homepage
- SoundApp is the premiere sound playback and conversion utility for the Macintosh. It is suitable for use as a sound-playing helper application with any of the popular WWW browsers, in addition to managing a collection of favorite sound samples and stand-alone usage.
- MacShare comments: With few exceptions, this is the only sound utility
you will ever need. This is a great application.
SoundEffects
- Version Number: 0.9.2
- Revision Date: May 30,1995
- Byte Size: 531K
- License: Freeware
- SoundEffects is a powerful sound editor. Its strength resides in the
capability of applying many digital effects to recorded sounds, and since
the effects are plug-in modules, you can enhance the program at any time
by just adding any new modules as they become available. Not only can
SoundEffects change sounds in many ways through its variety of effects,
but it can also handle multi-channel sounds, sampled at any rate up to
64kHz and with any sample size between 1 and 32 bits.
Recording rate and sample size are only limited by your Mac or your sound
input device. This version is still in beta format.
- MacShare comments: This is a terrific application for not only
making wild "robot" sounds, but also for cleaning up sounds that have strange
pops and clicks in them. If you like to play around with sounds, like I do,
you need this program.
Stuffit Expander
- Version Number: 5.1.2
- Revision Date: April 15, 1999
- Byte Size: 659K
- License: Freeware
- The latest version of this award-winning freeware product. Use it, as is, to
expand StuffIt, Compact Pro, BinHex & MacBinary files. If you add "DropStuff with
Expander Enhancer" you get PowerMac acceleration, expansion of many other formats
(.gz, .z, .uu, .ARC, .ZIP), joining of StuffIt segments, and more!
- MacShare comments: This is the only decompressor you'll ever need.
If you download files from the internet, this is essential software as it will
uncompress and decode anything out there.
IMPORTANT: If you don't currently have
decompression/decoding software, you'll have to take special steps in order
to de-.hqx this file. Here's the scoop straight from
Aladdin.
TechTool
- Version Number: 1.1.6
- Revision Date:February 3, 1998
- Byte Size: 598K
- License: Freeware
- Tech tool is a useful utility for safely rebuilding your desktop and your PRAM.
It does a more complete job that you can do by holding down the standard hot keys at
startup. It will also diagnose your computer and give you just about any information
you would ever need.
UUCD
- Version Number: 2.5
- Revision Date: October 20, 1998
- Byte Size: 105K
- License: Freeware
- UUCD is a UU decoder/encoder. You should use this when sending files, sounds,
graphics, etc... to your PC friends. I recommend BinHexing for anything you send to
a Macintosh user; If you've downloaded NetScape's Web Browser and Eudora, you already
have that capability.
Virtual
- Version Number: 2.0
- Revision Date: May 28, 1998
- Byte Size: 340K
- License: Shareware
- If you're familiar with X-Windows workstations, you have probably used one
virtual window manager or other. Virtual is one of those, for the Mac. It
presents you with multiple 'virtual screens' where you can place your
windows, so you don't have a clutter of them on your real screen. You can
switch virtual screens with a key combination, or by choosing that screen
in the Virtual window. You can drag windows around to move them to other
screens, and so on.
- MacShare comments: This has become one of my MOST used utilities.
You can configure it to contain as many different desktops as you need!! If
you like to have tons of windows open like I do, this is for YOU.
ZipIt
- Version Number: 1.3.8
- Revision Date: September 7, 1997
- Byte Size: 626K
- License: Shareware
- Homepage
- ZipIt is a full-featured Macintosh archival program. It is fully
compatible with PKWare, Info-Zip, and other zip compression products.
ZipIt includes a complete Macintosh interface, and boasts Mac-specific
features such as AppleEvent support and Macintosh Drag and Drop, as
well as general features such as encryption (in the United States and
Canada) and segmenting.
- MacShare comments: If you have friends who live in the DOS world,
this is an application you can use. .Zip is their version of .Sit for the Mac.
Sure, Stuffit Expander will "unzip" most anything, but it won't "zip" for you.
For "zipping" things to send back to a DOS user, you'll need this. It's also
useful for those rare occasions when Stuffit Expander can't "unzip" a file.
I had that happen once, and this program was all that saved that particular
file from the trash.
